MY ARTICLES
The New York Times
This summer I had the opportunity to intern at the New York Times, an organization whose media product has been on my coffee table since I was tall enough to see it, an organization that I inspire to write and report for. As the Social Media and Audience Development Intern, I was stationed in the newsroom. Here is some of the work that I did while I was there.
‘MY HANDS WERE TIED’: HOW READERS HANDLED UNETHICAL WORKPLACE REQUESTS
July 18, 2017
In this assignment, I asked the Times Facebook audience what unethical practices they've been coerced into performing unethical behavior at work. I collected the responses and made this article, a form of user-generated content that allows the reader to feel involved in the news. Word count: 936
‘IS THERE A MAN I CAN TALK TO?’: STORIES OF SEXISM IN THE WORKPLACE
June 20, 2017
I was able to collaborate with Susan Chira, a masthead editor and gender correspondent on this article. We asked women to submit instances of sexism in the workplace, collected their responses and created this article. My task was to read through all of the responses, edit them and organize them into subtopics. Word count: 1234
‘THE FACT IS, THEY STILL WENT FISHING’
July 15, 2017
This is one of the examples of the Top 10 Comments series that I completed every Thursday. I would look through the top stories of the week and collect the top comments from each of them. I would look for comments that were witty, funny, interesting, offered an interesting perspective or personal story. Word count: 826
ASIAN-AMERICAN WHITE WASHING IN FILM (ASK FAHIMA)
July 11, 2017
I was able to sit in on a panel hosted internally within the Times that discussed Asian-American white washing in Hollywood. Asian Netflix and HBO producers, actors and show runners spoke about the challenges of representation. I wrote a piece about it for the NYTimes Race/Related newsletter.
FAIR AND LOVELY
This project was one of my toughest yet most rewarding productions to date. Overcoming the challenges to accessing the filming location was well worth it for the incredible footage I captured. After working on this story for a few frustrating months, I was extremely happy with the final production.
